Continuing the conversation on metaphors and allegory within Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, including those that perhaps weren’t even intended by the artist, we look at the shell as a place of birth. We explore the idea that purity and femininity plays into the concept of birth. The folds in place within the shell could have easily been pockets for secrets to be held within. The Aporritos top becomes the literal translation of this - with hand-draped pleats to mimic the waves of the clamshell, and a fold-over asymmetric collar representing the act of hiding-away from the world, whether it is to hide oneself, or hide one’s secrets. Threads have been delicately stitched onto the top to signify the web drawn with each inference, each assumption made - like a red string that drapes itself across a storyboard. The hem of Aporritos is the element that ties everything together, with its asymmetric wrapping around the hips, like waves wrapping around the clamshell. 
 
The Kerdiya skirt takes from the metaphor that we believe is the soul behind óasi. Kerdiya, meaning heart in Ancient Greek, is hand tucked and tufted to give it its shape, quite literally getting caught on itself. Given that the entire piece is hand-draped, please note that there may be slight variation from piece to picture.
