Named after the Florentine Grottos in the Pallazzo Pitti, once home to the Medici family and frequently habituated by Botticelli himself. Grottos are cave-like structures, and in Florence, artificial, and decorated with intricate paintings and formations of corals and shells. Both the neckline and the hemline of the piece are finished with thin strips of lace, both created to look almost like a chain-link, continuing the allegory on free will, binding and the human body.
