Hand-embroidered in reverent detail, this belt draws its floral and vine-like motifs directly from the Oxburgh Hangings, embroidered by Mary Queen of Scots during her long imprisonment—a queen who stitched her defiance into cloth when words were denied her. Each thread here becomes not merely adornment, but echo.

The silhouette recalls the traditional garter belt: intimate, anatomical, worn pressed to bare skin. Its historical connotations—nudity, exposure, shame—are turned inward and then inverted. In The Basra Tapestry, garments often speak of restraint, and the belt, more than any other, becomes a symbol of control: of the body, of desire, of freedom denied. This piece carries that weight. Named after the Ancient Greek word for binding, Katadeo is a meditation on control, whilst simultaneously mimicking the language of intimacy.

A binding. A frame. A final flourish.
