A sari suspended in the push and pull of unseen forces—Phases of the Moon is less an object of clothing than a study in orbit, in constraint, in the quiet violences of influence. Along the pallu, embroidered moons wax and wane, each encased within fine, cage-like frameworks - all rendered in glass beads, and restrained as if their illumination must be contained. Each crescent is held in place, pinned to the sari for the wearer’s ornamentation in the moment. At the base of the pleats, embroidered tides rise and fall in shifting threadwork, echoing the ancient relationship between the moon’s gravity which controls the tides of the Ocean. Reigning the ocean in, here, the water is not calm. It listens and obeys. The embroidery mimics this dialogue—how water answers to the moon without ever meeting it.
The Phases of the Moon sari belongs to the cosmology of the Basra Tapestry, a universe of women whose lives were directed not from within but with forces pulling them hither and forth. While the sari acknowledges elements of helplessness, it does not become a narrative of victimhood, but rather more representative as a textile of tension, of mythic choreography. A reminder that gravity, too, is a form of authorship in ways. Worn, it becomes a garment of duality—freedom and constraint, rhythm and resistance, light and shadow.
