Graptos Vest
Ancient Greek for “written” or “inscribed.”
Graptos is made entirely from gunmetal-silver handwoven silk, woven by Óasi’s family of weavers in West Bengal, and lined in satin. Embroidered entirely by hand, the vest draws on the tradition of using textiles to tell stories that cannot always be spoken aloud. Dancing around the neckline is an embroidery inspired by the Oxburgh Hangings, a series of tapestries associated with Mary, Queen of Scots, created during her imprisonment. Believed to contain subtle references to her political convictions and personal circumstances, the hangings suggest how needlework became a way for her to communicate beyond the written word. Reinterpreted in metallic zari thread, French knots and glass beads, these motifs bring this tradition into the garment.
Along the asymmetric hem sits the symbol of Florence, the birthplace of Sandro Botticelli, alongside motifs developed by Óasi in response to The Birth of Venus. Together, these details weave different histories into a single piece, treating embroidery as a form of inscription through which women's stories can be preserved across time.
