Hamartia Jacket
Ancient Greek for “error” or “fault,” often used in the context of tragic flaws.
Hamartia is a slightly oversized, hip-length blazer made from nude-coloured tulle chosen to echo the shade of Venus’s skin. An asymmetric wrap detail frames the body, while free-hanging appliqués trace the movement of the sea across the garment. Each appliqué is embroidered onto silk organza using silk threads and metal sequins, building texture, dimension and shading.
Inspired by the waves in Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, which appear poised to wash over Venus in an act of ritual cleansing, Hamartia reimagines water as adornment rather than purification. In a world where the nude female form has often been associated with sin, the waves become a way for the wearer to reclaim the very symbols once used to cover, cleanse or condemn her.
