The Philia Jacket is a meditation on belonging, embodying the essence of an embrace, and crafted to evoke a sense of warmth and comfort when worn, almost shielding the wearer from the world, within its voluminous flare. Philia seeks to create something reminiscent of a mild sanctuary for wanderers and those condemned, embodying solace and refuge.
The base of Philia, Aidos is made out of checkered hand-woven silk chanderi, woven in the Indian state of West Bengal. Atop this, sits wandering tresses of Venus’s hair, capturing its flowering waves and cascading locks, embodying the femininity placed in hair, and the way that hair has been weaponized by women throughout history. The shape of the pearl embroidery and its placement is taken directly from the asymmetric flow of Venus’s hair within Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, extending from shoulder to waist, and around a single arm. Ladden with pearls representative of Venus herself, the story takes through the design, taking back to the blood-laced history of the pearl, and purity narratives.
The silhouette takes its roots from the early iterations of cloaks seen in newer-ancient eras, reimagined with voluminous sleeves and a dramatic wrap-around design. Worn cinched at the waist with the belt loops, it transforms into a dress-like structure; left open, it billows with a theatrical air, offering the wearer the power of movement and the drama of presence.
