Repetition is history’s most unrelenting failure, threading itself through the fabric of our lives and stories. We turn to the past, we are told, to learn, to mend, to avoid its snares—yet the echoes of what has been resound unbidden. How often do our tales mirror one another, their plots coiling into the same familiar spirals, their tragedies rippling endlessly through time? Repetition reveals itself not as a flaw, but as the marrow of existence—a rhythm in which we and the women at the heart of these narratives are inexorably bound. And if we see the bars of this cyclical cage, why do we not rise to shatter them? Why are the fates of so many heroines tethered by threads spun by unseen hands, their paths crossing in the shadow of misfortunes they did not weave?

The Epistrophe dress is symbolic of this very repetition, with its repetition of pleats, and drapes. The top is distinctly draped to mimic the form of waves crashing ashore, with a halter-style neckline, whilst the skirt is made to mimic the movement of ripples of water wrapping around the body, similar to what is seen in Botticelli’s Birth of Venus. Each rise and dip of the fabric has been recreated using carefully placed strips of fabrics that have been draped on by hand. The waist is cut diagonal to the body, accentuating the hips, playing on the juxtaposition of femininity and purity. Upon the skirt, delicate pleats have been added to align its movement with that of water. And effect accentuated by the embroidery, laden with zardosi, zari and pearl - detailing that could visually remind one of streams of water atop a cage-like setting, representative of being trapped with an inescapable narrative.
