Nema Trousers

₹16,800.00Price

Nema is a visual ode to the interconnectedness of stories, woven together with the metaphorical red string that links moments, people, and concepts across time. Drawing its name from the Ancient Greek word for "yarn," nema celebrates embroidery as a tool of storytelling.

Nema is crafted from organza with a modal satin lining, gathered through the waist before opening into a flared silhouette. The trousers are entirely appliquéd with satin and handwoven silk, arranged in shapes inspired by the Oxburgh Hangings. Made in the sixteenth century, these embroideries are associated with Mary, Queen of Scots, who worked on them during her years of captivity in England, alongside Bess of Hardwick and members of Mary’s household.

Their surfaces bring together plants, animals, flowers and symbolic motifs, some of which are thought to carry personal, political and religious meanings. Created within the confines of imprisonment, the hangings offered a way to communicate through images, weaving together the natural world with fragments of identity, belief and circumstance. Nema reinterprets these motifs through layers of silk and satin appliqué, bringing the shapes and stories of the historic textiles onto a garment that moves with the wearer.
