Arkys, a type of spider in Ancient Greek; chosen for its ability to weave the web, or lace up the parts of it that exist.
Arkys presents as individually-cut, multi-panelled trousers with a flared hem. Each panel has appliqued satin motifs, all symbols of meaning from The Basra Tapestry - some, taken from the prison embroideries of Mary Queen of Scots, others from motifs embroidered in the dresses of Elizabeth the first, and the remaining, inspired by botanical illustrations in paintings depicting the Birth of Venus. The intrigue of Arkys, and the cause behind its name is the lacing elements that have been scattered in-between - in our eyes, joining together the women as we have done in the research behind The Basra Tapestry.
