Moment in mind: Flocks of Birds dancing around in Florence, Feb 2022;
Embroidery inspired by a Victoria and Albert Archival piece on display
Pigeons Dancing around a Vine is made carved into a rust orange silk crepe. Birds are seen dancing around a blooming-vine like structure, illustrated in silk thread, metal sequins, glass beads and zardosi. Trumpet flowers drizzle over the border, spreading out alongside vegetation of spring flowers.
The pallu, and the base border of the saree is embroidered with óasi’s signature cord work, recreating a multi-coloured plaid, inspired by school-girl skirts. Gold lines have been intentionally scattered and incorporated across the saree to bring to mind Japanese kintsugi. The sari is finished with a border made out of layers of bone-coloured silk organza.
The Pieces To Give Away series focuses on the concept that in the case that a broken bone heals wrong, it must be broken again to heal right. PTGA revolves around the idea of bettering the self through systematically and efficiently inflicting struggle upon yourself by picking the tougher way out, the better way out. Breaking habits, practices, memories, and what you’ve built yourself up to be thus far, to make way for a better self, a healthier self. And on this journey, that we find so similar to the Japanese practice of Kintsugi, we find that some pieces of our history we throw away, some pieces of our history represent the idea of ourselves more than we’ve realised. While putting these pieces ‘of old’ in their places, we find ourselves reaching out for fillings, or as we call them, pieces ‘of new’ - a representation of the new self and our surroundings in an imperfect amalgamation with the old self. The series asks us to focus on what makes us who we think we are - the symbols, the moments, and the habits we’ve observed or enacted.
