Klema,

Ancient Greek, referring to tendrils - either a curled lock of hair, or used for plant tendrils as well.

The Klema sari is entirely hand embroidered, drawing upon emblematic motifs taken from moments throughout the Basra Tapestry - the cage structure, botanical etchings taken from Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, flowers from the Oxburgh hangings etc. Sitting atop a handwoven silk organza base, Klema depicts tendrils of hair growing through cage-like motifs, illustrated in metallic zari, zardosi, glass beads, and metal sequins. Hair, through the lens of the Basra Tapestry,  is seen as a nuanced exploration of femininity, drawing inspiration from Venus’s cascading hair in Botticelli’s Birth of Venus.

The tendrils shown on Klema delicately drape across the surface of the sari, paying homage to one of humanity's oldest and most evocative symbols of identity and expression. The pallu then takes the shape of the final sentence of the conversation, forming into a much more obvious cage, with repeated motifs inspired by the hair of Venus. The sari is finished with a border made out of layers of black-coloured silk organza.
