Named after the Ancient Greek word Apuduo - to mark, to imprint, - the dress becomes a meditation on memory and layering. The bodice starts off sculpted, in a soft, off-white satin that evokes the idea of purity: a blank space, a beginning - untouched, and unmarred. It is the place before story, before history and before true existence. Below it, the garment gives way to life - hand-embroidered botanical forms spill across the textured grey canvas, - made to evoke the inevitable passage of time and the representation of collected perceptions about an individual, the longer they live, the more they live.
The hand-embroidered motifs themselves take from the yarns that controlled fate in the ancient Greek world, as though to display the visual intertwining of the fates of multiple. On the nema vest, we see yarns white and silver - in our minds, each belonging to a different woman from our Basra Tapestry. Placed together like the narrative threads of a crime board, the yarns of fate map connections, themes, and motives in a tapestry of intention. The motifs are developed from botanica seen around Botticelli’s birth of Venus, and the Oxburgh hangings made by Mary Queen of Scots during her time in captivity at the English court. To further contrast the supple velvet base, a drizzle of pearls and glass beads have been hand-embroidered within the leaves & flowers embroidered, along with silver metal threads.
The silhouette is almost-architectural - a straight mini-dress, to allow the visual weight of the surface to speak. The delicate dip of the neckline gives room for soft elements of femininity, only complimented by the slight flare at the base of the dress.
