Metera Dress
Ancient Greek for “mother.”
The Metera Set takes inspiration from the shell in Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, the birthplace from which Venus emerges. The dress is made in two parts, allowing it to be worn as a mini or extended to a floor-length silhouette with its detachable skirt. The main dress takes the shape of individual shells, each hand embroidered on modal satin with metallic zari threads, pearls and glass beads. The shells are cut out, individually finished and hand stitched together to form the structure of the dress. A tie at the back allows the fit to be adjusted.
The detachable skirt is made from cotton chiffon, with different shades of fabric stitched together to create a gradual effect of shading. Vertical ruffles run along its length, giving the fabric a slightly dishevelled texture that contrasts with the structured shell surface above. The dress explores the shell as a place of origin and protection, asking whether a woman can escape the condemnation of the world around her if she remains within the safety of her birthplace.
