Paralia, or coast in Ancient Greek, takes from the edge of the coastline shown in Botticelli’s Birth of Venus - from the colours to the silhouette. The skirt features a series of finely-draped chiffon panels, each of which is placed to mimic the waves seen enveloping Venus’ clamshell as she washes ashore. The bottom section on the skirt drapes outward, with a gushing of draped tulle in 2 shades - creating a rather dream-like effect in the skirt, almost like the shading seen on the waves of the painting. Paralia tells us the story of purity, of water and its habitual cleansing that occurs as each wave washes the edges of the clamshell - ready to cleanse the pearl of its sins in case the need arises.
Paralia, derived from the Ancient Greek term for "coast," takes from the coastline of Botticelli's The Birth of Venus, from colours to silhouette. Paralia’s structure is composed of a series of finely-draped chiffon panels, meticulously placed to mimic the waves seen washing upon Venus’s clamshell. The lower section bursts outward with voluminous tulle, creating a dreamy, watercolour-like effect, with nuance and shading, almost like the shading seen on the waves within the painting.
Paralia tells us the story of purity, of water and its habitual cleansing - each wave represents a symbolic erasure, a fresh beginning, as it washes over the clamshell - ready to cleanse the pearl of its sins in case the need arises.
