Agraphos Tunic Set, Var. 1
Inspired by the Oxburgh Hangings, a series of tapestries associated with Mary, Queen of Scots.
Ágraphos brings together the ease of everyday dressing and the histories held within embroidery. The knee-length tunic features red appliqué motifs adapted from the Oxburgh Hangings, embroideries made by Mary, Queen of Scots, during her imprisonment. Believed to contain subtle references to her political convictions and personal circumstances, the hangings reveal how needlework could become a means of expression when other forms of communication were restricted.
Reinterpreted in red against the muted, finely striped fabric, the motifs travel across the tunic, gathering along the hem and appearing at the sleeves. The slightly voluminous bottoms balance the tunic’s long silhouette, while scalloped edging adds a delicate finish at the ankles. Together, the pieces revisit the tradition of using textiles to preserve stories, carrying fragments of a woman’s history into the present.
