Metera Skirt
Ancient Greek for “mother.”
The Metera Skirt takes inspiration from the shell in Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, the birthplace from which Venus emerges. Individual shells, each embroidered by hand in different shades of zari and metallic thread, are carefully placed and stitched together to form a pencil skirt that follows the body. A side slit allows ease of movement while revealing the layers of shell embroidery. The skirt explores the shell as a place of origin and protection, asking whether a woman can escape the condemnation of the world around her if she remains within the safety of her birthplace.
